How Much Does Shopify Website Design Cost in 2026?
How much does Shopify website design cost in 2026? Honest price ranges for DIY, freelancers, studios and agencies, plus plan, theme and app fees to budget.

Shopify website design costs anywhere from a few hundred dollars (a paid theme you set up yourself) to roughly $5,000 to $20,000 for a custom-designed store from an established agency, and $25,000 or more for a Shopify Plus build. On top of the build, you pay Shopify a monthly plan fee, card processing fees on every sale, and subscriptions for the apps you install.
The honest answer to "how much does Shopify website design cost" depends less on Shopify and more on who builds it and how much of the store is custom. This guide breaks down every cost line, gives sourced ranges for each route, and ends with a simple way to pick the right one for your stage.
Shopify website design cost at a glance
| Route | Typical upfront cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| DIY with a free theme | $0 for design, plus your plan | Testing an idea, very small catalogs |
| DIY with a paid theme | $280 to $500 for the theme (Shopify Theme Store) | Founders with time and a clear brand |
| Freelancer | $500 to $5,000 for most theme-based projects (ecomm.design) | Defined scope, owner who can manage the project |
| Small studio | $1,500 to $5,000 for starter builds (Branded Agency) | Brands that want strategy and design without agency overhead |
| Established agency, custom design | $5,000 to $20,000+ (OuterBox) | Growing brands with real revenue and complex catalogs |
| Shopify Plus build or migration | $25,000 to $250,000+ (Ringly) | High-volume stores, B2B, international, heavy integrations |
Two caveats before you trust any table, including this one. First, sources overlap and disagree: one agency puts premium theme setup anywhere from $500 to $10,000 (Radiant), which covers almost every row above. Second, these are build costs only. Your running costs are covered further down.
The fixed costs: Shopify plan and payments
Every route pays these. You can't design your way out of them.
Shopify plan fees (as of 2026)
US prices on shopify.com/pricing as of October 2026 (Website Builder Expert):
| Plan | Billed yearly | Billed monthly | Fee if you use a third-party payment provider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $29/mo | $39/mo | 2% |
| Grow | $79/mo | $105/mo | 1% |
| Advanced | $299/mo | $399/mo | 0.6% |
| Plus | From $2,300/mo | From $2,300/mo | 0.2% |
Shopify localizes prices, so stores outside the US may see lower plan fees. Check the pricing page from your own location before you set a budget. Shopify also says there are no setup fees on any plan.
Card processing
If you use Shopify Payments in the US, published online card rates are 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow and 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced, with Plus rates negotiated (Eightx). The same source notes that international cards, currency conversion and chargebacks push many brands to a blended rate of 4.0% to 4.4%. Use a third-party gateway instead and Shopify adds the extra fee in the table above.
Domain
A .com typically costs $14 to $20 a year when bought through Shopify (FS Code).
Theme costs
Shopify has free themes and paid ones. When we checked the official Shopify Theme Store, it listed 24 free themes, and paid themes ranged from $280 to $500. A paid theme is a single purchase, licensed to the store that bought it, and the theme developer provides updates and support (Shopify Help Center). Purchases are final sale, so try the demo store before you buy.
A free theme is not a lesser product. Shopify's own free themes are fast and well maintained. A paid theme mostly buys you more built-in sections and layouts, so you need fewer apps and less custom code. Pick the theme whose product page already looks closest to what you want. Changing a product page layout is where theme customization gets expensive.
Apps: the cost people forget
Apps cover reviews, subscriptions, email capture, bundles, search and more. Most charge monthly.
- A small store with 3 to 5 paid apps typically spends $30 to $80 a month, and a growth store with a full marketing stack $80 to $150+ (FS Code).
- Another agency warns that a flat allowance of $200 to $500 a month can overestimate a simple store or underestimate a complex one, and recommends budgeting from the actual tools you need (Branded Agency).
The second point is the right way to think about it. List the apps you need at launch, check their pricing tiers at your expected order volume, and add them up. Also ask your designer which apps a well-built theme makes unnecessary. A good build often replaces two or three small apps with native theme sections, which saves money every month and usually helps page speed.
Design and build cost by route
DIY
You buy a plan, pick a theme and set it up yourself. One estimate puts DIY at $0 to $500 total (Radiant), which lines up with paid theme prices above.
The real cost is your time. Writing product descriptions, shooting photos, configuring shipping and taxes, and making the store look right on mobile takes weeks for most first-timers. DIY is the correct call if you are validating a product with a small catalog and can't yet justify spending thousands. It is the wrong call if your time is better spent on sourcing, ads or sales.
Freelancer
A freelancer customizes a theme, sets up your products and pages, and launches. Project packages commonly run $500 to $2,000 for basic tweaks and integrations and $2,000 to $5,000 for deeper customization (ecomm.design).
Hourly rates vary a lot by region. One modeled estimate puts mid-level Shopify developers at $62 to $100 an hour in the US and $38 to $62 in the UK (Second Talent). Treat that as a rough guide; it's derived from wage data rather than real invoices.
Trade-off: you're the project manager. Freelancers are often excellent developers or excellent designers, rarely both, and few will push back on your brief. Ask to see live stores they built, not just mockups.
Small studio
A small studio usually means a senior designer-developer (or a tiny team) handling strategy, design and build. Starter builds commonly fall in the $1,500 to $5,000 range (Branded Agency), and theme customization projects at $2,000 to $10,000+ (OuterBox).
For reference, Iroko Digital's web design service starts at $1,000, with a fixed price agreed before work starts and most stores live in 2 to 4 weeks.
Trade-off: a studio is only as good as the person doing the work, and capacity is limited. Ask who will actually design and code your store.
Established agency
Most established Shopify agencies charge $5,000 to $20,000+ for a custom-designed store (OuterBox). Others quote higher: one puts custom design alone at $10,000 to $20,000 and custom development at $10,000 to $40,000 (Skynet Technologies), and another prices a fully custom theme at $10,000 to $30,000 (Radiant).
You're paying for process: discovery, UX research, wireframes, project management, QA. That's worth it when you have a large catalog, several stakeholders and enough revenue that a better-converting store pays back quickly. It's overkill for a 20-product brand in its first year.
Shopify Plus build
Plus projects are a different category. Published ranges include $25,000 to $50,000 for a lean Plus migration, $40,000 to $80,000 for a mid-range build, and $50,000 to $250,000+ for a full implementation (Ringly). OuterBox puts advanced and Plus projects at $25,000 to $100,000+ (OuterBox). Add the Plus subscription from $2,300 a month on top.
What actually drives the price
When two quotes for "a Shopify store" differ by 5x, it's usually one of these:
- Theme customization vs fully custom design. Adjusting a good theme is far cheaper than designing every template from scratch.
- Number of unique templates. Home, collection, product, about and contact is a small project. Separate landing pages, a quiz, a lookbook and three product page variants is not.
- Catalog size and data. A store with 300 SKUs, many variants and filters needs more setup and cleanup than one with 10 products.
- Integrations. ERP, CRM, 3PL, subscriptions and B2B pricing add development and testing time.
- Content. Copywriting, product photography and brand identity are often quoted separately. Ask.
- Migration. Moving products, customers, orders and URLs from another platform adds work, plus redirect mapping to protect your search traffic. Our guide on redesigning without losing SEO covers that step by step.
Hidden and ongoing costs
Budget for these after launch:
- Plan fees and card processing (above). For most stores, processing ends up larger than the plan.
- Apps, which tend to creep up as you add tools.
- Maintenance and fixes. One agency lists bug fixes at $50 to $200 and theme updates at $200 to $1,000 (Radiant).
- The next redesign. The same source suggests a full redesign every 3 to 6 years. See our guide to Shopify website redesign cost for what that involves.
- Theme updates on a customized theme. You don't pay to keep using a theme, but if its code was heavily customized, applying the theme developer's updates later can take developer time.
How to choose the right route
Use your stage, not your ambition, to decide:
- Pre-revenue or testing a product: DIY with a free or paid theme. Spend on product and traffic instead.
- Selling consistently, small catalog, want it done properly: a freelancer or small studio, fixed price, theme-based build with custom sections where it matters (product page, home page).
- Established revenue, complex catalog, several decision-makers: an agency with a documented process.
- High volume, B2B, multiple markets or heavy integrations: a Shopify Plus partner.
Whoever you hire, ask for these before you sign:
- A fixed price or a capped estimate, with what's included written down.
- Who owns the theme code and the store after launch (it should be you).
- How many revision rounds are included.
- What support you get after launch, and for how long.
- Links to live stores they built.
FAQ
How much does it cost to set up a Shopify store?
Setting up a store yourself can cost little beyond your first month's plan and a domain, since Shopify charges no setup fees and offers free themes. Hiring help for setup and theme customization typically runs from about $500 to $5,000 depending on scope (ecomm.design). Custom design from an agency costs more.
How much does a Shopify store cost per month?
Your monthly cost is the plan fee, plus apps, plus card processing on each sale. When we checked in October 2026, US plans on shopify.com/pricing started at $29 a month billed yearly ($39 billed monthly), and prices are lower in some countries. Small stores typically add $30 to $80 a month in apps (FS Code).
Is it worth paying someone to design a Shopify store?
It's worth it when the time you'd spend building the store is worth more than the fee, or when a better-designed store would noticeably lift sales. If you're still validating a product, a well-chosen theme you set up yourself is usually enough. Once you have steady traffic, design quality starts to show up in conversion rate.
How long does it take to build a Shopify store?
A theme-based store can go live in a few weeks once products, photos and copy are ready. Custom agency builds and Plus migrations take longer because of discovery, design rounds and integrations. Content is the most common cause of delay, so have product data and images ready before you start.
Are Shopify themes a one-time cost?
Yes. A paid theme from the Shopify Theme Store is a single purchase licensed to the store that bought it, with updates provided by the theme developer (Shopify Help Center). Free themes cost nothing. You only pay again if you buy a different theme, want it on a second store, or pay a developer to customize it.
